By

Having a good product manager (PM) is critical for building and delivering a great product. The PM is responsible for understanding the needs of customers, defining product features and requirements, and working with cross-functional teams to bring the product to market.

Here I have enlisted 9 reasons why a PM is important for building a great product. Although I have tried to bring in all the inputs from different segments but there can be more for sure.

1. Customer focus

The PM helps to ensure that the product is designed with the customer in mind. They collect and analyse customer feedback, conduct market research, and work with the development team to prioritise features that will address the needs of the target audience.

2. Strategic planning

The PM helps to create a clear product vision and strategy. They work with stakeholders to define product goals and objectives, prioritize feature development, and create a roadmap that aligns with the company’s overall strategy.

3. Cross-functional collaboration

The PM works closely with cross-functional teams, including designers, engineers, marketers, and salespeople, to ensure that everyone is aligned on the product vision and working towards a common goal.

4. Project management

The PM is responsible for managing the product development process, from ideation to launch. They create project plans, set timelines, and ensure that the product is delivered on time and within budget.

5. Bridges the gap between stakeholders

The PM acts as a bridge between different stakeholders in a product development process, including customers, executives, sales, marketing, engineering, and design teams. They ensure that everyone is aligned on the product vision, goals, and roadmap, and help to communicate priorities and progress across the organization.

6. Keeps a pulse on the market

The PM is responsible for keeping a pulse on the market and staying up-to-date on industry trends, competitor offerings, and changing customer needs. They gather feedback from customer interactions, surveys, and usage data to identify opportunities for improvement and innovation.

7. Drives innovation

The PM plays a key role in driving innovation by identifying new product opportunities, testing and validating new ideas, and championing new features that will differentiate the product from competitors.

8. Balances short-term and long-term goals

The PM balances short-term and long-term goals by prioritizing features and requirements that will have the most impact on the product’s success in the near term while also planning for the product’s long-term growth and sustainability.

9. Takes ownership of the product

Ultimately, the PM takes ownership of the product and is accountable for its success. They are responsible for making decisions, setting priorities, and delivering on the product roadmap. By having a clear product owner, the development team can focus on execution and delivering the best possible product.

Overall, a good PM is essential for building a great product. They bring together customer insights, product strategy, cross-functional collaboration, and project management skills to ensure that the product meets the needs of the market and the company’s goals.

In case I have missed out on something important feel free to join in.
